BBC signs Chelsea Flower Show deal
The BBC has signed a deal guaranteeing it exclusive coverage of the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show for a further five years.
Today's deal gives the BBC exclusive broadcast rights for the four major RHS flowers shows including Chelsea and the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show until 2013.
The other RHS shows covered are the Malvern Spring Flower Show and the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park.
Earlier this year, BBC2's stripped coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show, fronted by Alan Titchmarsh and Joe Swift, frequently pulled in audiences of more than 3 million.
Both organisations will collaborate on BBC2's Gardeners' World and the BBC's Gardener Of The Year, now in its 10th year and which culminates in a final on BBC2. Both programmes are made by BBC Birmingham's in-house factual department.
George Entwistle, the controller, BBC Knowledge commissioning, said: "From coverage of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Palace Flower Show to the enduring Gardeners' World, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, this partnership has produced a range of programmes and online coverage to satisfy every passion and interest in gardening."
Inga Grimsey, the director general of the RHS, added: "Sharing our passion for plants, gardens and gardening with the widest possible audience is at the heart of our charitable mission.
"The BBC has consistently delivered impressive coverage of our shows over the past eight years, helping us to inspire and inform millions of people"
