Oaklands' floral designs adorn celebrity party

For the second year running, Oaklands' floristry students were given the extra special assignment of creating floral displays for a glittering celebrity party, held by the ‘Radio Times' at Claridge's Hotel in London at the end of January.

Special guests including, David Tennant from ‘Dr Who' and John Simms from ‘Life on Mars', attended the ‘Radio Times Covers Party', which was held to thank celebrities who appeared on the front covers of the magazine during 2007.

Students Sarah O'Brien, Theresa Rodrigues, Nicola Costain, Sarah Rogers, Melissa Lee and Lynn Hunter are each studying on the College's year-long ANC in Floristry programme at Oaklands' Smallford Campus in St Albans.  They were assisted in their preparations and accompanied to the venue to set up for the event by course lecturers Stephanie Lui, Rebecca Dixon and Rebecca Bates.

"The College was recommended to the Radio Times by a former Oaklands' student who now owns her own florists," explains Stephanie, "we were absolutely delighted to be asked to take part in such a prestigious event for a second year running."

Stephanie added: "We were given a budget of £600 to create dramatic displays.  The Radio Times were keen to have a modern theme using white, green, black and gold colours.  It was very nerve racking for each of the students involved as they had to create their designs from scratch on site!"

Oaklands was commissioned to create a total seven displays to decorate the ballroom, lobby and bar area of Claridge's.

Student, Theresa Rodrigues, said: "I enjoyed the whole experience and I'd gladly do it again.  We were all nervous when we first arrived but we soon got into the swing of things and it was really exciting to be creating displays for such a prestigious event."
